Over 800 suspected criminals have been arrested worldwide after using an FBI-run encrypted messaging app, officials say.
In an operation, run by Australia and the FBI, devices with the ANOM app were distributed among criminals, allowing police to monitor their messages and chats about drug smuggling, money laundering and even murder plots.
The FBI, AFP, and CHS built the ANOM system in such a way that a master key silently attached itself to every message set through the app, enabling “law enforcement to decrypt and store the message as it is transmitted,” the document reads.
These suspected criminals believed that the messaging app they were using was secure and that their chats would remain private. It is not only bad actors that assume that their message apps are secure. Every day individuals, corporate and governments use leading messaging apps that they believe to be secure.
Like the suspects, lawful users around the world discover that unless their communications data is end-to-end encrypted in a zero knowledge environment then they are not secure, nor are they truly private.
As the worlds only Hypersecure communications provider PRIVUS maintains systems to prevent illegal activities on its apps despite having no access to message data. Message and personal data is protected at all times with end-to-end encryption and a zero knowledge environment where we do not hold or have access to your decryption keys.
We recommend that everyone checks their messaging, talk and video conference apps to discover how private, or not, they really are.
